The over 35-year journey of Jane’s Addiction took a shocking turn on September 13, 2024, in Boston when the band’s performance abruptly ended after frontman Perry Farrell attacked guitarist Dave Navarro onstage. The incident occurred during their show at the Leader Bank Pavilion, leaving fans in disbelief as Farrell, 65, was restrained by crew members and bassist Eric Avery. Avery's return to the band after a 14-year hiatus has been a major draw for fans on the current tour, but the night took an unexpected, chaotic turn.
Earlier in the week, Farrell faced criticism for his lackluster performances at outdoor shows in New York, sparking speculation on social media about possible drug or alcohol issues. During one of the shows, Farrell admitted to the audience, “ladies and gentlemen, I have to be honest with you. Something’s wrong with my voice. I just can’t get the notes out all of a sudden.” Avery also took to Instagram afterward, sharing, “looking forward to getting another crack at this spectacular rooftop venue tonight. I’m optimistic we will be better.”
However, things deteriorated further in Boston. The tension between Farrell and Navarro escalated during "Mountain Song" and "Three Days." By the time they reached "Ocean Size," Farrell walked over to Navarro, aggressively nudged him, and appeared to take a swing at him. Fan-shot footage of the altercation quickly spread online, amplifying concern about the band's future.
Jane’s Addiction has not yet addressed the incident or their upcoming show scheduled for tomorrow in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The band, known for multiple breakups and reunions since their original split in 1991, now faces uncertainty again after this public altercation.
Navarro had only recently rejoined the group after dealing with long COVID symptoms, having been replaced in previous years by Josh Klinghoffer and Troy Van Leeuwen. The Boston show was meant to celebrate the band’s return to form with the release of their new track, “Imminent Redemption,” their first original song with the full lineup since 1990’s *Ritual de lo Habitual*.
