Speaker Mike Johnson's efforts to pass a government funding bill are facing significant opposition within his own party, as well as from Democrats and the Biden administration. The proposed six-month funding bill includes a provision that would require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in federal elections, sparking controversy. At least seven House Republicans have publicly opposed the bill, which is enough to block its passage, given Democratic opposition. The bill is also unlikely to pass in the Senate, and President Biden has threatened a veto.
Johnson's challenge is further complicated by pressure from former President Donald Trump, who has urged Republicans not to support the bill without guarantees on election security measures. While Johnson has expressed agreement with Trump on the need for election security, he faces a divided Republican conference, with some members pushing for spending cuts and opposing short-term funding bills altogether.
If the bill fails in the House, it would highlight internal GOP divisions and could lead to further chaos as the government shutdown deadline looms at the end of September. Johnson has not yet provided an alternative plan but remains focused on pushing the current proposal forward despite the significant opposition.
